plate of bread

Baking a loaf of bread is something everyone should try at least once. The finished product is much tastier than anything you will buy in a store.

We have put together this basic guide to get you started.

Easy & Tasty Bread Recipe

You can make a loaf of bread with only a few ingredients. In fact, you may have the ingredients in your house already. Whatever you do not have can be purchased at any grocery.

This Super Easy Bread Recipe for Beginners from The Spruce is a perfect starting point for any baker.

You will need the following ingredients:

  • ¾ cup warm water

  • 1 package active dry yeast

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 ½ tablespoons sugar

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening

  • ½ cup milk

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

Start off with a large bowl. Pour the warm water into the bowl, then add the yeast slowly while stirring. Place the salt, sugar, vegetable shortening and milk into the bowl with the yeast and water. Stir the mixture up to combine.

Each time you make bread it requires a slightly different amount of flour due to differences in temperature and humidity. So you may not use all the flour, but you should use most of it. Start with 2 cups and mix them in with the other ingredients. You want the dough to be moist, but not sticky.

Place the dough on a floured surface and knead, adding flour as necessary. Put the dough in a bowl and cover it, letting it rise for an hour. Then take the dough out and punch it down. Preheat oven to 375. Let the dough rise again for 30 minutes, then bake for 45 minutes.

When school keeps you busy, it can be hard to find time to cook meals and prepare snacks. Thankfully, you don’t have to spend hours making something to eat. Give the following microwave mug recipes a try this year when you want a meal or snack that’s warm and simple to make.

Mac and Cheese

Microwave pasta and water in a mug for about four minutes total, but stir it every minute or so. Add milk, shredded cheddar cheese and margarine or butter, then microwave for about one minute. Stir your mac and cheese, then enjoy your quick and easy dinner or lunch.

Pizza

Mix flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt in a mug. Add milk and olive oil, then mix. Add marinara sauce, then sprinkle with shredded mozzarella, dried herbs and pepperoni. Microwave for about one minute and 20 seconds.

Omelette

Crack two eggs in a mug, then whisk them together. Stir in milk, salt, pepper, parsley and scallions, then whisk again. Microwave for about one minute, then stir and microwave for another minute. You can also add cheese and ham to this recipe if desired.

Cinnamon Roll Microwave Mug Cake

Spray your mug with cooking spray, then mix flour, milk, maple syrup, coconut oil, baking powder and vanilla in the mug. Add more milk to thicken it if needed. Whisk brown sugar and cinnamon in a bowl, then sprinkle it into the mug. Microwave for about a minute and 25 seconds.

Chocolate Brownie

Add milk or water, salt, vanilla extract and melted butter or oil to your mug, then whisk these ingredients. Add cocoa powder to this mix, then whisk again. Add sugar and flour, then whisk. Microwave for about one minute, then enjoy your dessert.

Bring your mug meal or snack over to our clubhouse, where you can sit in front of the fireplace. Contact us to learn more about our available apartments in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Smoothie and FlowersSpring wakes us up to new possibilities and what better way to toast those new chances than with a healthy smoothie? These colorful concoctions are beloved for providing vitamins, fiber, and nutrients to the drinker, without having to down piece after piece of fruit. If you're looking for the best spring fruit smoothies, then check out these recipes and get to sipping!

Blueberry Blast

Blueberries are notoriously known for being a spring fruit, so use up your extra ones this season in a blender. Try this simple recipe for a blast in the morning, and get your day started off right. Or combine them with other members of the berry family to switch it up a little bit, and add more dimension to your drink.

Grapefruit Gardens

Grapefruit is not known for being the best fruit to eat on its own, but the color and health benefits are undeniably attractive. Get your shot of pink with a grapefruit smoothie combined with kiwis (another spring fruit.) Apples are also excellent to sweeten up your grapefruit. Even though they're a fall fruit, you can probably get away with it just this once. Or celebrate spring's favorite color this year by adding some spinach for a grapefruit green smoothie

Apricot Animation

Bring your apricots to life this year with a little help from the strawberry. This smoothie is a jolt of energy when you're wondering how Monday arrived so quickly. Grab this on the go or do it up right with a fun glass, garnish and straw. These little touches can make your smoothies even more enjoyable.

The apartments in Flagstaff are a great place to try new recipes and make them your own. If you're looking for the right kitchen to test out your next smoothie, check out Highland Village Apartments to see what we have to offer. Call us today to find out more about our available apartments!

Fall in Love with Fall-Flavored Foods

Our theme for October is Fall Into Autumn! We’ll be bringing you everything from tasty treats for the season to décor ideas that will “leaf” you inspired to deck out your home in the colors of the season! We’re lucky to be in a four-season town, so we’re excited to “fall” in love with Autumn with you!

So … here’s the thing. It’s officially Fall, and that means pumpkin spice. We swear, these days the pumpkin spice invasion feels like a zombie apocalypse: from M&Ms and Oreos to hamburgers and kitty litter (no, we’re not kidding), it seems like the pumpkin spice trend is taking over America. Well we’ve had enough. Not to completely dismiss this favorite flavor for fall … We snag a pumpkin spice latte or two before the season ends. But there are SO many other fantastic fall flavors to try! Don’t believe us? Well here are FIVE!

Chai

Pumpkin spice is basically the new chai. Seriously, don’t you remember a few years ago when you could buy just about ANYTHING with chai flavoring? It’s time to take it old school and reinvest in this former fall fav! But don’t just cop out with a chai latte. Because it’s also time to kick the chai-craze up a notch. We’re talking chai chocolate, y’all: Dagoba Organic Chocolate offers a chai chocolate bar that will seriously knock your socks off. We’re also talking Brown Butter Chai Spiced Snickerdoodles. Is the name a little long? Yes. Is it worth it? … Oh, yeah.

Salted Caramel

Caramel is like your cool cousin. Salted Caramel is like your fancy aunt. We just discovered Ben & Jerry’s Salted Caramel Core ice cream, and we’d love to tell you how awesome it is but our mouths are still full. If you want something that’s healthy-but-still-decadent, try Fiber One’s Salted Caramel Cheesecake Bar. It’s new, and it’s delicious, and it’s only 150 calories, so take that, diet!

Pecan Pie

We know what you’re thinking … Pecan pie isn’t a flavor, it’s a food. Well, guess what? We don’t care. It’s still scrumptious, and it’s officially become one of our favorite Fall flavors. If you don’t believe us, then believe M&Ms. The Mars company has officially started rolling out Pecan Pie M&Ms, and we’re so happy about it we could cry. But we’re going to hold back our tears … otherwise we might miss this delectable Pecan Pie Ravioli recipe. The only problem we have with this tasty treat is it leaves us at a loss for what to have for dinner … maybe pumpkin pie?

Snickerdoodle

So snickerdoodle itself is also not technically a flavor … but it’s recently taken on a life of its own as a flavor, so we’re going there! Check out General Mills Chex Mix Muddy Buddies, and jazz them up as muddy buddy snowballs! Or try some Nestle Coffee-Mate’s snickerdoodle coffee creamer to perk up your morning. Braum’s Ice Cream also has a snickerdoodle flavored treat.

Sweet Potato

… No, we’re skipping the pumpkin pie. Because this. This must happen. Break out the sweet potato fries. (Hint: Why not just head down to Beaver Street Brewery or Brews & Cues for a delicious Bowl of Goodness?) A sweet potato latte sounds like a sweet and savory alternative to a pumpkin spice latte. And let’s not forget the classic sweet potato casserole. But we also said we’re skipping the pumpkin pie, and here’s why: Sweet potato pie. A southern staple, and a savory snack for fall! (PS: Do yourself a flavor-favor and check out the sweet potato grilled cheese sandwich recipe we shared back in April!)

What are your favorite Fall flavors?

5 Tongue-Tempting Grilled Cheese Recipes to TryThis April our focus is RYAS: Rocking Your Apartment’s Socks! We’ll take you from recipes to try in the kitchen to thrifty apartment décor and much more!

Our mouths started watering the moment we heard that April is National Grilled Cheese Month! Nothing will rock your apartment’s socks quite like filling your apartment with amazing smells from your kitchen … and with all the variety cooking up a grilled cheese has to offer, we have no doubt you’ll love celebrating your apartment and this tasty sandwich in tandem! Check out these five amazing grilled cheese recipes that will leave your taste buds dancing this month!

Grill Your ABCs

The basic grilled cheese is already divine. A grilled cheese with bacon? Amazing. But a grilled cheese with bacon and some nice thinly sliced apple? … Whoa. All you need is some sliced sourdough, sharp cheddar, a few strips of crispy bacon, and an apple of your choice sliced thin. Get an easy-peasy recipe here: Apple, Bacon, and Cheddar Grilled Cheese

Ooh, Honey!

This is apparently Oprah’s favorite grilled cheese … and we all know that what Oprah loves, we pretty much all love right there with her. We never would have thought of putting honey on a grilled cheese, but this recipe sounds too delish to miss. Here’s your recipe: Havarti, Honey, Tomato & Basil Grilled Cheese

The Green Goddess

Ooh-la-la! You’ll want to make sure you have a good melty cheese for this recipe that’s oozing with flavor. We’ve seen this recipe on white or wheat bread, but the real mouth-watering ingredients are all the greens: baby spinach, avocado, and Green Goddess Herb Peso? Yes, please! Check out the recipe here: Green Goddess Grilled Cheese

Kiss the Melon!

Melon? On a grilled cheese? We weren’t sold until we started reading this recipe for a Sugar Kiss melon and Chorizo-Manchego Grilled Cheese. Since it can be a little tricky to find a Sugar Kiss melon, we made this one a twofer with a Prosciutto and Melon Grilled Cheese, too! Don’t judge too quickly … we definitely encourage you to try this one out for yourself! Find recipes here: Sugar Kiss Melon and Chorizo-Manchego Grilled Cheese and Crispy Prosciutto & Melon Grilled Cheese

Holy Sweet Potato, Batman…

Here’s another twofer … because how could we say no to sweet potatoes on a sandwich?! First there’s the sweet potato and cheddar, sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar, which sounds almost more like a dessert than a sandwich. Then there’s the sweet potato and toasted pecan grilled cheese that sounds more like a pie than a sandwich. It’s basically dessert sandwiches … How could you say no?! Take on both these sandwiches with recipes here: Sweet Potato Cheddar Grilled Cheese and Sweet Potato and Toasted Pecan Grilled Cheese
Happy Grilling!
