3 Ways to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint for Earth Day

  |     |   Food, Life at Highland Village

Earth Day is April 22, and all month long, residents of Flagstaff apartments have been making efforts to reduce their carbon footprint. Looking for some ideas? Try these three easy tips to celebrate honor Earth Day.

Buy a Laptop Instead of a Desktop

Sure, a desktop packs a bigger punch, but that requires more energy. Browse the Web, check your email, do homework and play games on a laptop instead of a desktop to lower your carbon footprint by consuming less electricity. Plus, if you’re a student at NAU, you’ll appreciate having a laptop to take  to class.

Avoid Buying Bottled Water

Single-use plastic water bottles take up literally tons of space in landfills. While recycling is better than throwing your water bottle in the trash, not buying the bottles to begin with is the best option.

Still, you don’t want to get dehydrated, so buy a reusable water bottle — preferably one made of metal or glass to avoid chemicals that can leach from plastic bottles into the water. If you don’t like the taste of Flagstaff tap water, keep a filtering pitcher in your fridge and refill your water bottle from it throughout the day. Be sure to bring your water bottle with you to campus so you stay hydrated all day long without adding plastic water bottles to the landfill.

Buy Locally Grown Food

The Farmers Market on North 4th Street and 2nd Avenue is an ideal place to purchase fruits, vegetables, honey and bulk grain products from local farmers. Doing so reduces your carbon footprint by decreasing the transportation distance from farm to table and also supports the economy right here in Flagstaff!
